Cosmic Rays and the Search for a Lorentz Invariance Violation
نویسنده
چکیده
This is an introductory review about the on-going search for a signal of Lorentz Invariance Violation (LIV) in cosmic rays. We first summarise basic aspects of cosmic rays, focusing on rays of ultra high energy (UHECRs). We discuss the Greisen-Zatsepin-Kuz’min (GZK) energy cutoff for cosmic protons, which is predicted due to photopion production in the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB). This is a process of modest energy in the proton rest frame. It can be investigated to a high precision in the laboratory, if Lorentz transformations apply even at factors γ ∼ O(1011). For heavier nuclei the energy attenuation is even faster due to photo-disintegration, again if this process is Lorentz invariant. Hence the viability of Lorentz symmetry up to tremendous γ-factors — far beyond accelerator tests — is a central issue. Next we comment on conceptual aspects of Lorentz Invariance and the possibility of its spontaneous breaking. This could lead to slightly particle dependent “Maximal Attainable Velocities”. We discuss their effect in decays, Čerenkov radiation, the GZK cutoff and neutrino oscillation in cosmic rays. We also review the search for LIV in cosmic γ-rays. For multi TeV γ-rays we possibly encounter another puzzle related to the transparency of the CMB, similar to the GZK cutoff. The photons emitted in a Gamma Ray Burst occur at lower energies, but their very long path provides access to information not far from the Planck scale. No LIV has been observed so far. However, even extremely tiny LIV effects could change the predictions for cosmic ray physics drastically. An Appendix is devoted to the recent hypothesis by the Pierre Auger Collaboration, which identifies nearby Active Galactic Nuclei — or objects next to them — as probable UHECR sources.

Spontaneous Violation of Lorentz Invariance and Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Rays
We propose that local Lorentz invariance is spontaneously violated at high energies, due to a nonvanishing vacuum expectation value of a vector field φμ, as a possible explanation of the observation of ultra-high energy cosmic rays with an energy above the GZK cutoff. Certain consequences of spontaneous breaking of Lorentz invariance in cosmology are discussed.
متن کاملEffects of Lorentz invariance violation on cosmic ray photon emission and gamma ray decay processes
In this work, we use Lorentz invariance violation (LIV) introduced as a generic modification to particle dispersion relations to study some consequences of single photon emission, known as vacuum Cherenkov radiation, and photon decay processes in cosmic and gamma rays. These processes are forbidden in a Lorentz invariant theory but allowed under the hypothesis of LIV. We show that the emission ...

Do we observe ultra high energy cosmic rays above the Greisen-Zatsepin-Kuzmin cutoff due to violation of Lorentz invariance? Abstract Violation of Lorentz invariance has been suggested by Coleman and Glashow as a possible explanation of observing ultra high energy cosmic ray events above the Greisen Zatsepin Kuzmin cutoff. Earlier some of the ultra high energy cosmic ray events have been correl...
متن کاملTesting Lorentz Symmetry Using High Energy Astrophysics Observations
We discuss some of the tests of Lorentz symmetry made possible by astrophysical observations of ultrahigh energy cosmic rays, γ-rays and neutrinos. These are among the most sensitive tests of Lorentz invariance violation because they are the highest energy phenomena known to man.
متن کاملHigh Energy Astrophysics Tests of Lorentz Invariance Violation
Observations of the multi-TeV spectra of the Mkn 501 and other nearby BL Lac objects exhibit the high energy cutoffs predicted to be the result of intergalactic annihilation interactions, primarily with IR photons having a flux level as determined by various astronomical observations. After correcting for such intergalactic absorption, these spectra can be explained within the framework of sync...
